What Uplink Trace Is
Uplink Trace is a network-origin analysis tool built entirely on open data. When you trace an IP address, we assemble a dossier from public sources: geolocation from the DB-IP Lite database, autonomous system names from RIPE registry data, and reverse DNS from the global DNS itself. Nothing is scraped from private databases, and nothing in the result is invented. See a live example in the dossier for 8.8.8.8.
What Makes It Different
Most lookup sites drop a pin on a map and let you assume a precision that does not exist. Uplink Trace does the opposite.
- Honest confidence ratings. Every field in a dossier carries a rating that reflects real-world accuracy: country-level geolocation is reliable (roughly 95–99 percent), region and city are considerably weaker, and mobile or VPN connections are frequently wrong.
- Probable-area circles, not fake pins. We render an approximate region on the map rather than a street-level marker, because a street-level marker would be a fiction.
- Datacenter and VPN flagging. We heuristically flag likely hosting and VPN ranges based on the AS operator name. The flag reads likely, never proven, because that is what the evidence supports.
- Batch tooling. The log analyzer and bulk lookup turn a server log or a list of addresses into a summarized origin report.
An Honest Statement of Limits
IP geolocation estimates where a network is operated, not where a person is. It cannot identify an individual, and it cannot resolve a household or street address. What it does well is network forensics: establishing the probable area and the operator behind traffic, with a plain statement of how much to trust each field.
